FAQs

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture works by stimulating acupuncture points, which are influential points to the channel they comprise. Once the point/channel are stimulated, the body’s Qi can move through previously blocked areas of the channels resulting in less pain, more movement, and better function of the channel and associated organ. In Western terms, acupuncture works by stimulating trigger points and other proprioceptive muscle cells to release over tight muscles and stimulate an immune response for overall health.

Will it hurt?

Although the needle will be penetrating the body, it really only feels like a needle for the first layer of skin. Once deeper, the sensation feels more like a deep ache or spreading. You may have small bruises or slight soreness after a treatment, but it should subside 24 hours after.

How do herbs work?

Chinese herbs work through flavor, nature, and temperature, meaning they influence the body’s constitution to bring balance. Herbs are subtler than prescription medication, but not weaker. They require more compliance with daily dosing and often take one to two months to see improvements.

How do I take herbs?

Herbs are administered in either bulk (whole herbs), granule (powdered), or pill. The form of herb you choose depends on your time and routine. Although bulk herbs are the strongest, they take considerable time to cook and need to be cooked every other day. Granule herbs are pre-boiled, dehydrated, and powdered for convenience and only need to be added to hot water to drink. Both bulk and granule can be customized to your specific pattern and constitution. Pills are very convenient for the modern lifestyle, are good for a long term formula, but are not easily modified. In the end, if you are able to be consistent, no matter the form, the herbs will work better.

Will herbs interact with my prescription medications?

The interactions of herbs and drugs are very specific and require further research. In general, herbs are contraindicated with drugs that require circulation for a specific amount of time, such as blood thinners. Herbs can speed the liver’s metabolism and detoxification of such substances. For this reason, it is important to disclose your full list of medications to your practitioner.

How does cupping work?

Cupping is a traditional bodywork technique that helps with stagnation of blood and body fluids from trauma or pathology. It applies suction to the area, increasing circulation of blood and lymph, therefore decreasing inflammation and increasing function. There may be marks left by the cups that are not painful, but may remain for a day to a week after.
